Advisory committees

In the era of the tax cap, I was wondering if your district still has a budget and finance advisory committee and if you do, what is the scope of their work? How involved are they in drafting or giving input on the school budget? Are there other projects or issues you ask them to provide advice?

Thanks.

  • Bill the meeting is open to the public.
  • Rob Curtis, I think you should consult your legal counsel about the whole board meeting as a committee. I believe that is a violation of the open meetings law. I don't think the board can meet as a whole like this because the discussions must take place in open session at a board meeting.
  • Our district utilizes 5 board committees which are open to the public and no more than 3 board members sit on. These committees Policy, Athletics, Long Range Planning (facilities), Excellence in Student Achievement and Finance are used to discuss various topics related to the committees. At every board meeting the committee chair(typically a board member) gives a committee report to the rest of the board. Sometimes these reports have recommendations for the board to then act upon. We do use the finance committee to work on the budget and then sometimes in lieu of the finance committee we schedule a budget workshop which would include the whole board and be open to the public. We have one board meeting a month and typically these committees meet once a month also.
  • Our board now meets as a committee as a whole to discuss the budget. We felt it became too difficult to meet as a committee and then have the same conversations again with the entire board.
  • Grateful for the two replies I received to my question, hoping to get a few more... would anyone else like to comment about which committees you use, and what are some responsibilities you assign to your budget and finance committees regarding the budget process?
  • We still have a committee for that. They are very involved in the budget process to help inform areas that may need to be cut or provide a recommendation on the tax levy increase. We have decided not to increase our levy to the maximum allowable in years past.
