Annual board agenda planning

Hello board members, At this week's Board Officer's Forum I heard a bit about the idea of planning an annual board agenda. Do any of you do this currently? I'd appreciate any templates or ideas on how to begin to plan this out for next school year. Thank you in advance, Laura

  • Hello all. Our board holds an annual one-day retreat at the beginning of August to review the past year, set goals and go over our five-year strategic plan. We sometimes have a guest speaker and always get reports and interaction from our administration. It is well worth the time and starts the fiscal year off in a good way for us. We don't have an annual agenda? I'm not sure what that looks like, but would be interested.
  • Paul Haggett - We just held a Board Goal Development workshop in January that was moderated by NYSSBA. They helped us conduct a SWOT analysis which helped drive the BOE goal development. We are in the process of finalizing our goals which will help drive the Superintendent's objectives and the District's goals for the next school year.
I am happy to provide more details.
  • Ed, I would also like to see your long term agenda if you don't mind sharing? My email is lisa dot anderson at henhudschools dot org. Thank you !!
  • Hello all:
I was thinking about making a post of my own on Board goal setting, as my board has never done this. Our administrative team meets to plan district goals and the board reviews and approves them, but we have never laid out goals of our own in my time on the board. Karen, thank you for linking your current board and district goals. Do you have others from prior years that you could share? Bill, if you would not mind sharing your board’s goals for this year, or prior years, I would be happy to connect with you privately to get them.
  • This is a great thread, as I was coming to post a similar question. We really need a board procedure manual and to be consistent in goal setting in our district. One of our members did create a calendar, similar to what Ed Fersch mentioned in his comment. Ed, I, too, would love to see that document, if you would be willing to share. Also, if anyone has a board procedure manual or planning outline, it would be a wonderful resource!
  • The comments here are very helpful. As a new board president, I have also been looking for ways to ensure we are being very intentional in the setting of our agenda, and that the BOE trustees are equitably involved in the goal setting process along with the Superintendent. Thank you for the question and replies!
  • Hi Laura, we are approving our board and district goals for this year tonight -- but here is a lilnk to our current BoE page with our goals: https://www.pawlingschools.org/district__board_goals Glad to be helpful.

  • Thank you, Ed, Karen & Bill. This feedback is so helpful to me as a first year board president. Ed, I would really like to see your document if you don't mind sharing it. My email is LTrentacoste at FPBSD dot org. Thank you. Our board has been talking about working on goal setting. Karen & Bill, if you don't mind sharing, would you please tell me what some of your board goals have been in recent years. I would like to have a better sense of what other boards are doing when I bring this to my board for consideration. We're already mid-year but I would like to plan ahead and think about this for our re-organization meeting in the summer. Thank you all very much. I am learning a lot in this forum. Laura
  • Back in the 90s, one of my predecessors as board president, created a document that we refer to as our long term agenda. This lists, on a month by month basis, the items that need attention from the board or the administration. We use it as a reminder when planning our agenda each month. Items on the list include approving our safety plan, approving our external audit, reviewing certain policies annually and having periodic reports from our cooperative management team. It is a fluid document that is updated as needed. I found it necessary in my first years as President and continue to rely on it after many years. I would be happy to share the present version with anyone.
  • We do annual board and district goal-setting in October in public. It's a series of goals that set the board's agenda for what we want to accomplish and stand for each year.
