Board member school building access

So this is an odd topic to discuss but how many districts allow board member badge access to the district's buildings? If so is it restricted in anyway?  If not would you want it? And what would your reasons for it?

my opinion on this is no absolutely not, board members should be treated as every other visitor.

  • In Massena, all board members have access to all buildings, and per policy, we must report to the school office as any other visitor.
  • We have badge access in Gloversville but are expected to enter a school building like any other parent/visitor during the school day.
  • We have access. During school hours we use the main entrance as all other visitors do, but the access allows us to enter for our meetings if doors are locked or after hours for other meetings. Because card access can be tracked, the school is always in the know of which members enter when.
  • At the City School District of Albany, Board members do not have badge access to all school buildings. They do have access to Academy Park (where the superintendent's office is) and Harriet Gibbons (where we hold our board and committee meetings). That said all board members are expected to sign in at these buildings and to report to the office in others with prior communication with the building principals. This is important as we do not want to show up unannounced and unintentionally disrupt the school schedule.
  • Oneonta members all get a badge to all school buildings. If entering during the school day, we are expected to check in with the office/door monitor. We remind all new members that access is a privilege. Being on the Board of Education does not give you special access. Communication with building principals should be done ahead of time along with the purpose of the visit. I can definitiely understand larger districts hesitation, but ours is a small city district.
