BOE Access to the School

It was recently brought up that BOE members should have access cards to the school primarily for the purpose of meetings, etc. I am wondering how other schools handle this and if your BOE members have this available to them or not.

Here is our current policy on this:

Board Member School Visits:
Unless specifically authorized to act on behalf of the Board of Education, an individual Board member has no right to make an official visit to the school for the purposes of inspecting the school, gathering information, or giving directions to any employee of the school. The individual Board member’s rights are no greater or different from those of any other individual. As such, individual Board members, acting in their official capacity, shall provide advance notice of a school visit to the Building Principal and shall notify the Principal upon entering the building. Concerns or opinions related to the education program in individual school buildings shall be directed to the Superintendent of Schools.

  • Our board members have access to the building we have our meetings in only. At the rest of the buildings in our district and during the day the board members are to follow the same rules as any parent. This is is followed unless prior plans were made with the building principle and superintendent for an event or special guest appearance, etc. in a specific building. BOE members cannot just pop in at a building or classroom at their wish. This is done for school safety measures.
  • Our board members have access cards that work at all buildings. We have not had any issues of members abusing their cards. If a board member needs to go to a school during the day they need to follow normal sign in procedures.
  • Hi Jennifer. Our board members do receive school ID cards, however, while district staff may swipe their cards to enter a building, the BOE ID cards do not have that functionality. We have them so that when we are going to a meeting or a school event, we can ID ourselves.
