BOE meetings

I am wondering what districts are holding in person BOE meetings vs virtual BOE meetings? If in person who has community in person and who in person.
Our school is currently hybrid. We were virtual, then in person with virtual community, and now moved to all virtual but have a discussion coming up at our next meeting about going back in person.
I would love to know what you all are doing and why. Thank you so much.

  • Our meetings are in person because our schools are open and we felt it was important to set an example: that our buildings are safe for students and staff as well as the board. Two of our board members who are retired seniors are attending virtually due to their specific health risks.
  • Thank you all for your replies. We have a few members that want in person but a few that do not see the benefit at this time. We are hybrid for learning and I think the members that want us back in feel it shows that we feel it's safe to be in if we are in. However, those members that do not want to meet in are in the mindset that having 6 of us in a room (BOE and Super) and everyone else virtual is hard to properly run a meeting. We only have one camera and sit 6ft apart at our own tables when we are in.
I appreciate the comment about if one of us bring in the virus then administration would have to quarantine which would add another layer in the mess. We will continue to discuss as a team here but the feedback is helpful to see what others are doing and why.
  • We are still doing virtual (Zoom) board meetings. We tried a partial in-person meeting and it was really difficult for the public to follow. They asked that we go back to live streamed Zoom meetings.
  • We give BOE members the option to attend in person or virtually. Members who attend in person follow 6' distance and mask rules. The campus is closed to visitors so the community has to attend virtually. Most administrators attend virtually so that if participants have to quarantine, administrators would not be impacted.

Most BOE members attend in person as have I. It is important for me to attend in person because I am not going to ask a student to go into a building that I am not willing to go into.
  • Our district is also hybrid and the board is in person with virtual community. We have ramped up the presenters and presentations so our board meetings look more normal. We are using two cameras and many microphones so that the virtual audience is able to hear better and see the presentations better. We will be looking at how we do this going forward we will keep the streaming capability and because it is reaching a lot of the community. Once the 6' distance is relaxed we can fit all back in the board room. We are looking at a larger space in the community for some board meetings so we can eventually bring in more public if the current restrictions hold.
  • Our district is 5 days a week for K-5 and hybrid for 6-12. Our Board has been meeting in person for several months. We each have our own table, and everyone is more than 6' apart and wearing masks. Under the orange zone restrictions, we didn't allow any community, and limited ourselves to 10 people in the room. That meant admins doing reports to the Board had to take turns joining us. Now that the Orange Zone restrictions have been lifted, we allow a limited number of community members based on chairs being more than 6' apart in all directions.
  • Our district hybrid and we are meeting in person in our Middle School cafeteria. Each board member and members of the Admin Team have their own table.
My thought is if we are having students and staff in the buildings the least the board could do is meet in person.
