Brainstorming District Improvement

Good afternoon,

At a recent BOE Meeting, a Member asked the following question:

"When do we get a chance to brainstorm ideas for making the district better?"

Given that this is the my first year as a BOE President, and only my second year as a BOE Member, I told the member I would look into how this is addressed at other schools. It is important to note that, to me, it seems this question is blurring the lines between governance and management. However, I would really appreciate any insight people may have in addressing this concern. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Patrick Whipple

  • Does your board develop annual goals with your superintendent? Annually you should be requesting data on topics important to the board - you review the data and develop goals. Then you develop superintendent goals to meet the goals. When you evaluate the superintendent at school year end you have a basis for that evaluation.
The board should be setting the direction of the district - that's through goals and policy. If you're not developing goals how does the superintendent know what to do?
  • Our board does this during our summer retreat. We also work on district goals language during that meeting.
  • I would say during budget and/or goal setting periods but it has to be in conjunction with your Superintendent. You need a majority and discuss timelines and expectations. Do other things get removed or rescheduled for the new?
