cannabis sales

We recently had a community member contact us to ask us to send a letter to our Town Board stating that we did not want them to "opt-in" to sale of cannabis in our community. Our reaction is that the school district should not be involved in this decision. I am wondering if any others have been approached with this request and how you responded.

  • We wrote a letter asking our town to opt out. A few months prior we had children in our district get sick from eating cookies laced woth cannabis. Since NY state hasn’t put out any guidelines on how to protect school age children from the edibles we thought it was best to write a letter asking for them to opt out.
  • Our town council voted to opt-out of selling cannibis, but may approve it in the future. I attended two public hearings held by the town council. About 50 people attended the first meeting and opinions were very divided and emotional. There were only a few people at the second meeting and I was the only one to speak - as a resident.
  • Hi Ed. No one has brought this up at our school board meetings. But, I attended a couple of our town board meetings where our town board decided to opt-out of the cannibis dispensary law -- so they won't be permitted in our town. I guess that means its a non-issue for us (for now).
  • Not yet but we would have to have a board discussion and vote around this issue if it is something the board wished to pursue.
