DEI Climate Survey

Hello! As part of our DEI task force we would like to do a "climate survey" to get an accurate assessment of our school and community environment, in order to identify issues and develop a plan for future curriculum, events, guest speakers, etc.  Has anyone used a company for this purpose? When I attended the NYSSBA officer training in the Fall, some schools spoke about using  NYU.  Are there others out there anyone recommends? And if you did one asking students to participate- what grades and how was it introduced to families?

    A climate survey can be quite useful if conducted anonymously. I would definitely include high school students as they provide an important gauge for the actual environment. Great ideas can get lost in implementation. We recently conducted a survey of key issues in our community and had a great response from families, faculty, and even students. It did require multiple points of contact and reminders.

    We are looking into this as well, more so as an equity audit though. We are just starting to look at what groups out there do this work and developing a list of questions to ask them before deciding to work with them.

    Thanks. I wonder if any offer an upgraded service of collating the data? We recently used a company that helped us develop a 5-year strategic plan and the first step was sending a survey to the community. This company collated the data for us which was then analyzed with the committee.

    Hi Suzie, We are planning to roll out a climate survey this Spring. Our Board had looked at BOCES here on LI as a resource. Our superintendent recommended going with the ThoughtExchange software. That isn't a traditional survey tool. Using ThoughtExchange, our superintendent suggests we break up the survey questions into smaller topics and send multiple survey questions, one-by-one, to the school and community members. To Bill's point on all the data to dig through, our superintendent feels that utilizing this tool, we bring in specific data bit by bit to dig through it and sharpen our focus.

    hi, we used Educational Vistas Inc. They are out of Schenectady. We got a lot of data that takes time to dig through. Not a bad thing, but it does take time.
