Evaluation of the Superintendent and Goal Setting

Good Morning,

How many of you use the NYSSBA evaluation tool? Do you like it or use something else?

What time of year do you typically do your evaluation, I am thinking June would be optimal because July 1st you will have a change in BOE members. Have you invited trustees that are not back for another term to take part in the evaluation?

Our evaluation process in the past has been somewhat informal.  We are moving to a more formal process.

Do you combine your goals for the next school year in the same meeting? How specific do you get with your goals? My first 2 years on the board we had rolling somewhat broad goals. We have since moved to some more specific goals that might include a new initiative or facilities improvements etc.

  • We are using the NYSSBA evaluation process. It is much better than the 1-5 scale or prior scales which were yes/no. This selection criteria allows for a full evaluation process of the goals set by the Superintendent. We always do our review in June of that year before the school ends. This allows the opportunity for all current members to weigh in on the evaluation for that year. We do not roll over goals into the same meeting as the evaluation. We discuss in public and set our goals in September of that new school year.
