  • I believe that we are board members and have been elected to represent our constituents. However, a survey regarding school climate asking all stakeholders can be very helpful in trying to assess where the district is on certain issues that are of concern to the public.
  • Thank you Tracy. We currently do not have a survey like that in place, but that is exactly what I was getting at. I realize now my wording did not make that clear- not a survey specifically regarding the superintendent but a general survey.
  • We have an annual survey to assess the "health" of the school. It is filled out by staff, students, and parents. The results are reviewed by the Building level teams. We believe that is an effective way to stay abreast of perceptions. What you are describing sounds more like 360 feedback.
  • Absolutely not. The Board oversees the superintendent and makes those decisions. It’s a slippery slope to include the community. I believe that’s an unwise practice.
  • Our Superintendent sought community and staff feedback via a survey on her own. We ( board and superintendent) have discussed a climate survey as a district initiative but have not moved forward on this. We have also worked to clear any obstacles in communication pathways so that our policies & district procedures are clear to all stakeholders.
  • Thank you for feedback. To be clear, this was a procedural practice question and not coming from any place of personal concern about any of our district staff. I fully understand that it is the responsibility of the BOE to evaluate/hire/renew contract of the Superintendent. While parents tend to be vocal about concerns, staff are typically not as comfortable sharing concerns due to fear of repercussions. Yet their perception of how a district is run can be a huge factor in progress towards shared district goals. That is why I wondered if other districts operated solely using their observations as trustees or solicited feedback from others on their satisfaction with how the district was functioning (strengths and weaknesses). Our BOE has not historically surveyed staff or community, but I understand some do from time to time.
  • No, The superintendent works for the Board the board members work for the community. The relationship of the board and the superintendent and the superintendent with the admin team are the most important.
  • Absolutely not! That’s the job of the BOE!!
  • We have not. But the community is usually not shy in sharing criticism on most any issue with board members. So the board would be aware of any such concerns as they arise.
  • We have not. The superintendent reports to the Board.
