High risk sports

I'm curious how other Boards are responding (if at all) to the recent State decision to allow high risk sports? My BOE is struggling with this issue and I've called a special meeting for Monday.  There is concern about allowing a relatively small % of students to potentially jeopardize the entire student/teacher/staff population and send us into a full remote learning mode.

We also feel it is grossly unfair to the Performing Arts programs that have been completely overlooked in this decision making process.

Is anyone else having these concerns/discussions?

  • We approved high risk sports and have contracted with a doctor to weekly test our athletes. In Nassau County most schools are doing the same and will not compete with you unless they are tested. We have had outside athletics occurring all year and there were no large outbreaks. I think we felt it imperative for students to go back to some level of normalcy. I agree with you that something similar should be considered for the performing arts. Our adolescents are suffering from depression and isolation and we have to weigh the risks.
  • We approved our plan at a special meeting this morning, including wrestling. I also agree about the disparity between athletics and performing arts.
  • School administrators have shared that athletes are letting their grades slip because of the lack of sports. Some schools have required students participating in sports to be remote. Testing is key but your point on inequity with the Arts is spot on. There isn't an easy answer.
  • We had long and divided discussions. The most important part was asking administration to create detailed requirements for participation in sports. The biggest part was one positive test on a team and they take a10 day break. A second positive, includes coaches and the team is done for the season. We also said we want the other areas of the school to start looking at safe ways to get their programs going again
  • We are supportive of moving forward, sans wrestling, based on the additional concerns shared on that sports. With that said, your point on performing arts is spot-on and I have raised it with our administration. The state has barely paid attention to the arts during this entire pandemic and it’s sadly not surprising it has remained mostly not addressed at the schools level.
