HPV mandate

One more question I have is regarding the proposed legislation to make HPV vaccine mandatory for school attendance. One district in Suffolk has written a letter opposing the mandate. We in our district are considering doing the same. Have you discussed this with your board members?

  • Board advocacy on this issue is dicey because there are political and religious aspects to people’s views on this issue. Boards represent all students and choosing a side could be seen as advocating for students with one belief over another. The Bill has been around for years without any traction and I’m not sure it will have much now either. But if Boards start to get involve with legislation at this stage in the process,it could also set a precedent that could encumber Boards in political legislative advocacy all year, every year, leaving less room for education advocacy and the day to day issues of the schools. Of course each of us has personal views on this particular proposed legislation but we also need to view it from our role as trustees of an entire community that has varied opinions.
  • This will be a topic at our next meeting.
  • Commack School district has discussed this issue and we are sending a letter to our legislators and the governor against this unnecessary legislation.
  • Letters sent should go to our elected officials? Maybe local BOCES and NYSSBA?
  • Sayville’s school board has fully agreed to stand together to protect our children against this completely unnecessary vaccination bill.
  • Thank you for this. Good point for discussion. It has moved from the Senate to the Assembly. Very concerning.
  • We will be discussing this as a board next week. My personal opinion is it should be a parents choice. I believe Commack just agreed to send a letter super and board together.
  • Isn’t this Bill still in committee?
  • The law is over reaching. Coupled with the fact that the state is planning on having clinics in each school to administer the vaccines should give all boards pause.
