We had a student rep for quite a while and then suddenly had a hard time getting any students to commit the time. I miss their presence and we have been trying to get someone to step up now that meetings are back in person.
You’ve had a student board number for about eight years. They participate in every meeting and provide a report. I like having a student board member. It’s good to get their perspective and it’s nice to have a student to ask them any questions during a meeting.
We have a student ex-officio on our board and have for about 7-8 years. He/she reports on what is going on at the high school and also acts as an advocate for the student body. We have had an outstanding student rep this year for really the first time. He is not shy about bringing student grievances to the board’s attention and adding to the discussion on issues that affect students. Other student members have not “mixed it up” to the same extent, but the young man we have this year is just what we were hoping for when we started the Ex-officio program. Whether to have an ex-officio on the board is put up for public vote every two years, so I think this is the year for us to do that again. It is very valuable for the voting members of the board to get the first hand student perspective.
We have one student representative on our board each year. Typically the person is the student council president. Their perspective is very important to us and the information flow from students to board and back completes the circle we are trying to create. Each meeting the student representative is given time during our discussion portion of our meeting to bring forward topics, issues, information and to provide answers to questions we may have asked during the last meeting. They only are part of the public portion of our meetings. Highly recommended for the experience for all.
For years, our board has had a student representative. The student would report on student related highlights and activities such as placement in contests, upcoming dances, student fundraisers and more. A majority of the information is provided by our secretary. Our board enjoyed 'this connection' with the students.
We have 2 seniors every year as student reps to the board. They come to our business meetings not our work sessions. They report on the news around the district - what is taking place in each building. They get this information from our secretary. They also share personal insights which during the last 2 years has been my favorite part of our meetings.
