Superintendent contract extension

Hello board Officers!

We have an outstanding superintendent who is approaching retirement age (he would be a young retiree) and is approaching the final year of his three year contract with us (his terms).

I believe my board would leap at the chance to extend his contract.  Is now too early to poll the board on this and get discussions going?

Secondly, should our super opt out of an extension, how involved in working his contacts to help find candidates for his replacement should we expect him to be?

Thanks all!

  • We include an automatic one-year extension in our Superintendent contract. When the Board finishes our Superintendent Evaluation we discuss in exec if everyone is agreeable to offer the extension. We also have a fantastic Superintendent -- and this keeps her contract at three years, rather than having it wind down each year.
  • I think the first step is to ask the entire board if they are willing to consider offering the existing superintendent an extension. If that response is positive, then the president should ask the superintendent if an extension would interest him. If that does not work out, Boces would be the next step to start a superintendent search. Good Luck
