When to appoint Committee members

Hello Forum members:

I am the current president of our board and expect to be elected to the same position in July.  However, I don't like to assume, and don't want to politick for the job.

However, I recently read that board committee appointments are among the typical items of business taken care of at the Reorg meeting.  We have never done this, and have instead waited to the August meeting to make said appointments.

How do your boards handle this duty?  In July, or at a later time?

  • Our board usually waits to our September meeting. Our meeting in September is usually before school starts.
Our committees typically don’t meet during the summer and this allows new board members time to get acclimated before volunteering to serve on a committee.
  • We do it at Reorg. Get a list of committees, when they meet--dates, times and frequency so you can send it in advance.
  • In Saugerties we do them either in August or September but never at the reorg meeting. This gives new board members a chance to acclimate and see whats what.
  • Here in Massapequa we usually choose which committees board members will serve on in September, not the reorganization meeting.
